Marketing vs. Advertising?

Is there a difference?

... YES!

Many people confuse marketing with advertising or vice versa. Both are equally important, but, they are very different from each other. Understanding the difference between the two can put your company on a path to future growth like never before.

Here are the definitions of each:

Advertising: The paid, public, non-personal announcement of a persuasive message by an identified sponsor; the non-personal presentation or promotion by a firm of its products to its existing and potential customers.

Marketing: The systematic planning, implementation and control of a mix of business activities intended to bring together buyers and sellers for the mutually advantageous exchange or transfer of products.

You can see by the definitions that it is easy to be confused to the point where we think of them as one-in-the same, so lets break it down even further ...

Advertising is a single component of the overall marketing process. It involves getting the word out about your business, product, or services. Advertising can include ads, direct mail campaigns, highway billboards, television, radio and even the internet.

The best way to consider the difference between advertising and marketing is to think of marketing as a pie and advertising is just one slice of that pie.

Marketing is a lengthy process that takes time and can involve many hours of research and effort (and action) before a marketing plan can be effective. It is not "run one ad and hope" something happens. It requires a good team of employees and vendors to make things happen!

Turn negative to positive!

By simply changing negative words and phrases to positive words and phrases, you will feel better inside and actually do a better job too.

A few examples are:

Negative to Positive:

I have to .......... I get to

Problems ........ Opportunities

Setback ......... Challenge

Pain ............... A Signal

... and, phrases like:

I want to get out of debt to I am going to earn more money!

I’m stressed out about this project to I always create amazing results in my projects!

If you have experienced negative results or have negative feelings towards your current print vendor (or are paying too much for your printing), change that negative to a positive today.

Are you taking care of the three "Gettins"?

Over the years, we have all witnessed many great companies lose their way because they only focused on two (of the THREE) most important elements in running a business;

They are:

1) gettin' jobs IN (sales)
2) gettin' jobs OUT (production)

...and the most important one of all;

3) gettin' PAID! (cashflow)

While the first two are crucial to the success of any business and should be a top priority when planning, the most important one (and often overlooked) is "gettin' paid."

Cashlow, profit, sales, volume, profit, cashflow, sales, volume, PROFIT (get the point?) are not bad words and strict payment policies should be in place from the very beginning so your new clients understand what your terms are and do not be afraid to enforce them if they violate your policies.

How many times have you heard the story about a client that owes a vendor a bunch of past due money and they promise to pay if they could only get one more rush job by Friday? Then, the owner agrees to do it out of fear of losing a "good" client and ALL the money eventually winds up becoming bad debt because the owner was afraid to freeze the account or produce the new work COD while payments were to be made on the past due balance.

Its painful to think about especially in these already troubled times so do yourself a favor and make sure you take care of all three gettins' from now on ... it might just save your business.

"Old-Fashioned" hard work pays off.

Is old-fashioned hard work a thing of the past?

.... Not at Red Rock, says Tom Bello.

"We’re not afraid of hard work ... actually, we work our tails off all year long and our clients love it."

Tom Bello, owner of www.redrockprinting.com in Boca Raton, Florida, also says "as our industry (and the economy) have gotten tougher and tougher over the years, we continue to impress our clients with old-fashioned, roll-up-your-sleeves, keep the client first, hard work."

Because of this positive attitude, Red Rock continues to add high quality clients (and charities) to their expanding customer base simply by out-servicing and out-working their competitors. At the same time, Red Rock offers an unmatched commitment to total customer satisfaction on every print job they manage. It's the "Red Rock" difference.

Tom Bello also adds, "Basically, printing is printing - it's ink on paper and most printers do a decent job of it, but it’s also easy for many print vendors to just mumble the words about excellent service, total commitment and keeping the client first and then not back it up. This is exactly where Red Rock is different and where we separate ourselves from the pack ... we love to advertise it first, then prove it on every job, for every client, every day. Delivering on our promise is the most rewarding part of my job."

See for yourself - Let us bid and print your next project and watch us deliver the goods!

Are you using Magic 8-ball marketing?

Do you know what are the most important qualities your client looks for in a print vendor?

Chances are, if you guess, you will guess wrong.

For instance, you might assume that price is the most important factor when choosing a new vendor when in reality, they might actually need FAST service from their suppliers. Or, you might believe fast service is their hot issue when they desperately want friendly, personal, one-on-one attention from you.

So, how do you determine exactly what your clients' needs are when all clients require something different?

It is simple ... You ask them.

The next time you are working with a new (or an existing) client, do your company a favor and ask them exactly what is the most important thing they require in a vendor. You might be surprised by their answer and if you are, I believe you will hold the secret to fulfilling their needs on a whole new level in the future while securing your place as a top-notch vendor!
